Rankin County sheriff’s department urges residents to prepare for winter weather

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department said Friday that growing confidence in a winter weather system expected to affect the area at the end of the week means residents should begin preparations now.

The sheriff’s department, the county agency responsible for law enforcement and public safety, posted the advisory on its social media page and asked people to take steps to protect themselves and their families.

Winter storms can bring hazardous travel conditions, power outages and interruptions to routine services. Officials urged basic preparedness measures such as ensuring you have an adequate supply of medications, nonperishable food, water and batteries; keeping cell phones and essential devices charged; and checking on neighbors who may need assistance.

Residents should monitor local forecasts, follow instructions from emergency management and law enforcement, and avoid nonessential travel if conditions deteriorate. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
