Rankin County honors detention officers with lifesaving awards

Sheriff Bryan Bailey and the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department on Facebook recognized three detention officers for lifesaving actions after an inmate attempted to take their own life in December 2025 at the Rankin County Adult Detention Center.

Dustin Shavers, Jacob Burkes and Cameron Johnson were presented with Lifesaving Awards, the department said. The post praised the officers’ selfless actions and said they bring credit to themselves, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office and the field of law enforcement and corrections.

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office is the primary law enforcement agency for Rankin County, Mississippi, and operates the county adult detention center. Jails and detention centers nationwide face ongoing challenges related to inmate safety and mental health, and departments often recognize staff who intervene to prevent deaths.

The department’s post did not provide additional operational details about the incident. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
