Police arrest man in Southaven attempted armed robbery
SOUTHAVEN, Mississippi — Southaven Police arrested a man Sunday in connection with an attempted armed robbery at a Goodman Road business, authorities said.
Officers initially responded about 10:59 a.m. to a business in the 1000 block of Goodman Road East after a white male entered the store, went behind the counter and assaulted an employee, police said. Investigators said the suspect was reportedly armed with a tool believed to be a screwdriver and attempted to access the cash register but did not appear to take anything.
The employee fled the store, and the suspect chased her outside and pushed her to the ground before fleeing west toward Swinnea Road, police said. The victim sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
Police identified the suspect as 54-year-old Larry Shawn Mayher. Mayher was taken into custody about 8:45 p.m. Sunday during a traffic stop at Stateline Road and Assembly Street in Southaven, police said. He is being held and will be transported to the DeSoto County Jail on an armed robbery charge.
Police credited tips from the public along with investigative work by detectives and patrol officers in locating the suspect. Southaven is in DeSoto County in northern Mississippi, near Memphis, Tennessee. The case remains under investigation. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
