Pike County jail holds baptismal ceremony

Pike County Sheriffs Office Detention Center recently held a baptismal ceremony led by Chaplain Brother Doug Hughes, a member of First Baptist Church of Summit, the sheriffs office said. During the ceremony, the chaplain presented an inmate with a Bible as part of a spiritual milestone observed inside the facility.

The office said the inmates grandmother attended the ceremony. The sheriffs office thanked the detention center leadership team for supporting the event and said the ceremony was part of efforts to support rehabilitation and spiritual well-being among those in custody.

Major Jewel Hines, Pike County Detention Center administrator, said, “The Pike County Detention Center staff and myself desire to provide an environment for inmates that encourages and supports their rehabilitation and spiritual growth.” Sheriff Bryant “Wally” Jones said, “Again, I made a promise to the citizens of Pike County that I would do everything that I could to help rebuild our county to safety. This Baptism is a part of that promise.”

Faith-based programs and jail ministries are commonly used by corrections officials and community groups to offer counseling and support that officials say can aid rehabilitation and reentry. The sheriffs office did not provide further details about the inmate. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
