Paul B. Johnson State Park reopens with upgraded campsites, cabins

HATTIESBURG — Paul B. Johnson State Park reopened March 26 following extensive renovations aimed at improving the visitor experience, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks said.

The agency marked the grand reopening with a public event that included a morning social, remarks from state Rep. Larry Byrd and tours of updated facilities.

The park now features 129 renovated RV campsites with full hookups for water, electricity and sewer, picnic tables and grills; 12 newly renovated cabins; and two duplexes, officials said. The cabins include updated kitchens with stainless steel appliances, new dining areas, living room furniture with flat-screen televisions and upgraded bedrooms and bathrooms with walk-in tile showers.

Other improvements include two bathhouses, a day-use restroom, a group camp bathhouse and new air conditioning units in multiple areas. The duplexes offer outdoor porches with picnic tables, fire pits and grills, as well as screened-in back porches with outdoor furniture, the agency said.

“The recent renovations at Paul B. Johnson State Park highlight our continued investment in Mississippi state parks,” MDWFP Executive Director Lynn Posey said. Reservations for cabins and campsites are open, the agency said. Admission is $2 per person, with free entry for children ages 5 and younger.

Visitors can enjoy fishing, boating, a playground, a nature trail and a disc golf course. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
