Oxford police warn of warrant scam calls

The Oxford MS Police Department said in a Facebook post that its Patrol Division has taken multiple reports this week of scam calls in which callers falsely claim recipients have outstanding warrants and must pay money immediately to avoid arrest.

The department said law enforcement will never call to demand payment or ask for money to clear a warrant. It said officers do not collect fines or fees over the phone and urged residents to treat such calls as scams.

Officials warned that scammers often use fear and urgency to pressure victims and may spoof phone numbers to make calls appear legitimate. The post advised that if people are unsure, they should hang up and call their local law enforcement agency directly using an official number.

The department asked residents to share the warning so others, especially the elderly, can avoid becoming victims. Telephone scams that impersonate police or court officials have been reported across the country and often target older adults.

Officials urged residents to stay alert and protect themselves and their loved ones from fraud. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
