Oxford police warn of slick roads as sleet begins to fall
Oxford Police Department said in a Saturday morning Facebook update that sleet is now falling and road conditions are worsening across the city. Bridges are beginning to ice over, parking lots are glazed and some roadways are becoming slick, the department said.
The department advised residents to avoid travel unless it is an emergency and to exercise caution if they must go out. The post noted that night shift officers reported no issues earlier, but conditions have deteriorated since dawn.
Police departments commonly use social media to relay urgent public-safety information during rapidly changing weather. Freezing precipitation can create hazardous driving conditions quickly because bridges and overpasses can ice before other surfaces, increasing the risk of crashes and stranding motorists.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distances and avoid unnecessary travel. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
