Oxford officials warn of warrant payment phone scam

The Oxford Municipal Court warned residents this week about a phone scam in which callers falsely claim the recipient has an outstanding warrant and demand immediate payment to avoid arrest, the court said in a Facebook post.

According to the court, callers often identify themselves as court or police department personnel, then send a link and insist on an immediate payment. The court said neither the Oxford Police Department nor the Municipal Court will call, text or send a link demanding payment for a warrant.

Officials urged anyone who receives such a call or message not to click links or send money. When in doubt, contact the Municipal Court or the Oxford Police Department directly using phone numbers listed on their official websites or through trusted government directories.

Scams that impersonate law enforcement are common across the country and can take many forms. The court encouraged residents to report suspicious calls to local authorities. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
