Oxford issues shelter-in-place after ice storm

OXFORD — The City of Oxford issued a shelter-in-place alert after an ice storm left downed trees, power outages and impassable roads, city officials said in a social media post.

The alert, posted on the city’s Facebook page, directed residents to stay inside and avoid roads, bridges and walkways. The post said both Oxford and the campus are experiencing major impacts and urged people to call 911 only for life-threatening emergencies.

Shelter-in-place notices are used to protect residents when travel is hazardous or when outdoor conditions pose immediate dangers. Officials typically advise staying indoors until crews can clear roads and restore utilities; weather-related power outages and damaged trees can disrupt services and create safety risks.

Staying off roadways helps emergency responders and utility crews move safely and reduces the risk of vehicle crashes or additional injuries. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
