Oxford activity centers close for weekend amid winter weather threat
Both the Coach Howell and Oxford activity centers in Oxford, Mississippi, will be closed Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 24-25, because of the threat of extreme winter weather, a Facebook post said.
Activity centers serve as community hubs that typically offer recreational programs, fitness facilities and space for local meetings and youth activities. Closures can disrupt scheduled classes, drop-in recreation and other public events that rely on those spaces.
The Facebook post said the centers will provide an update Sunday about whether they will reopen for regular hours Monday, Jan. 26. Officials often close such facilities during severe winter conditions to protect staff and visitors and to reduce the risk of weather-related accidents.
Residents who use the centers should monitor the centers’ social media channels and local weather advisories for further guidance. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
