One killed, three injured in Mississippi storm

One person was killed and three were injured after storms swept parts of Mississippi overnight, state officials said in a Facebook post Monday. Tornadoes are suspected to have touched down in Pike, Lincoln and Walthall counties, the post said, and about 40,300 customers statewide were without power.

Officials reported damage in Amite, Lawrence, Lincoln, Pike, Smith and Walthall counties, including damage to homes and numerous downed trees and power lines. Assessments are underway and the list of affected areas may change as emergency teams complete surveys.

The post said the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and state officials are in contact with local emergency managers and will respond as necessary. The agency is the state’s coordinating body for disaster response and often leads damage assessment and recovery efforts.

Officials asked Mississippians to pray for the family of the deceased and for the recovery of those injured. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
