Officials distribute MREs, water at Lafayette County and Oxford sites

Officials are distributing meals and bottled water at several locations in Lafayette County and the City of Oxford from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. while supplies last, a Facebook post said.

The post said distribution will be limited to up to three days’ worth of provisions per person to help ensure supplies reach as many residents as possible. Sites listed include Harmontown SO Substation at 12 CR 517; Lafayette High School at 160 Commodore Drive; Lafayette County Fire Station 3 at 22 CR 369; Oasis Church at 861 Highway 6 West; and the City of Oxford sites at City Hall, CB Webb, and Wayne Johnson Thacker at Garden Terrace.

The post urged residents to “please be patient and kind—these sites are being staffed by the National Guard working hard to serve our community,” and noted supplies are limited and distribution will continue until they run out.

MREs, or meals ready-to-eat, are prepackaged rations commonly used in emergencies and by military and relief organizations. The Facebook post did not specify a reason for the distributions. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
