Newton man faces weapons, traffic charges after late-night stop

NEWTON — A traffic stop for a noise ordinance violation late Friday night led to multiple charges against a Newton man, the Newton Police Department said.

Officers stopped a vehicle in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive during the late hours of Feb. 28 for a violation of the city noise ordinance, police said. The driver was identified as Richard Russell.

Authorities said Russell was charged with violating the city noise ordinance, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Chief McKenzie Patrick said in a statement, “The Newton Police Department will continue to enforce the city’s ordinances and state laws no matter how big or small they are.”

Under federal and state law, convicted felons are generally prohibited from possessing firearms, and traffic offenses such as driving with a suspended license or without insurance typically carry fines and other penalties. No additional details were released. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
