Mississippi seeks public input on Opportunity Zone nominations

The Mississippi Development Authority said it is seeking public input as it prepares to identify up to 101 eligible census tracts for Opportunity Zone designation.

The agency said the tracts are being considered for Governor Tate Reeves’ nomination to the U.S. Department of the Treasury as part of the next round of Opportunity Zone designations. The new designations will take effect Jan. 1, 2027, and remain active for 10 years.

Opportunity Zones are intended to encourage long-term private investment in economically distressed communities, the MDA said. The agency said input from local governments, economic development organizations, business leaders and community partners will help evaluate and prioritize eligible areas.

Public comment is now open, and MDA said public input sessions will begin in April. Additional information and a public comment form are available at Mississippi.org/community-resources/opportunity-zones/.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
