Mississippi says bicyclists must follow traffic laws

Mississippi considers bicyclists vehicles under state law and requires them to follow the same traffic rules as motor vehicles, a Facebook post reminded motorists and cyclists.

The post lists key requirements: obey all traffic signals and stop signs; ride with traffic on the right side or in designated bike lanes when available; use hand signals for turns and stops; do not ride on interstate highways; limit riding side-by-side to two cyclists; use a white front light visible 500 feet and a red rear reflector or light at night; and maintain working brakes. The post also noted that helmets are not required by state law for adults but are strongly recommended.

These rules are intended to reduce collisions and improve safety for all road users by clarifying expectations for cyclists and drivers. Motorists are reminded to share the road and remain alert, and cyclists are urged to follow the listed equipment and signaling requirements.
