Mississippi reports third death, 143,600 without power after winter storm

Mississippi officials said in a Facebook post that a fatality has been reported in Alcorn County, bringing the total to three as the state continues to grapple with severe winter weather.

About 143,600 customers remain without power, down from a peak of about 180,000, officials said. Utility companies and crews are working to restore service, and state officials said they hope a few hours of above-freezing temperatures and sunshine will melt ice and allow workers to make more progress.

Road crews face similar challenges, officials said, because plowing in areas with compacted ice can worsen conditions. State damage reports list 21 residences with major damage, 27 with minor damage, one business with major damage and 20 public roads with major damage.

Forty counties have submitted 210 requests for assistance. Officials said the state has requested another 30 generators from FEMA, bringing the total to 90, and the Mississippi National Guard is setting up a fuel distribution network. Officials said generators are being sent to health-care facilities, nursing homes, warming centers and rural water systems. Sixty-seven warming shelters are open in 35 counties.
