Mississippi Highway Patrol, Department of Public Safety celebrate 88th birthday

The Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Mississippi Department of Public Safety are celebrating their 88th anniversary, the agencies said in a Facebook post noting they were established under Senate Bill 161 in 1938.

The post asked the public to join in wishing the agencies a happy birthday and praised nearly nine decades of service. It said the organizations have served and protected Mississippians with dedication, integrity and honor, and that the mission to keep roads safe and communities strong remains unchanged.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety is the state agency that oversees highway safety and related services, including the Highway Patrol. Highway patrol agencies generally focus on enforcing traffic laws, responding to crashes and assisting motorists, roles that contribute to public safety on state roadways.

The agencies marked the milestone as a moment to reflect on their history from early patrol cars to today’s troopers. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
