Mississippi DPS posts April Fools about adding scooters to patrol fleet
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety said on its Facebook page that it was adding scooters to the fleets of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the Commercial Transportation Enforcement Division and Capitol Police to “enhance mobility and visibility across the state.” The post then revealed the announcement was an April Fools joke and urged residents to “Stay safe, Mississippi!”
The department oversees multiple state law enforcement functions, including traffic enforcement through the Mississippi Highway Patrol, oversight of commercial vehicle safety through the Commercial Transportation Enforcement Division and security for the state Capitol by Capitol Police. These agencies routinely use patrol vehicles and other equipment to carry out public safety missions.
Public agencies sometimes use social media to engage residents, raise awareness and share safety messages. A playful post can attract attention, but clear communication is important so the public does not misunderstand operational changes to law enforcement resources.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
