Mississippi Department of Public Safety shares historic Highway Patrol photos

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety posted a series of historic photos on its official Facebook page under the hashtag #FlashbackFriday, showing instructors at the department’s first school in 1938, a 1947 Mississippi Highway Patrol group photo, an elephant the department described as “sporting MHP,” and throwbacks to old patrol cars, the agency said.

The Department of Public Safety oversees the Mississippi Highway Patrol and other state public safety functions, including traffic enforcement and highway safety. The Highway Patrol has long been a visible arm of state law enforcement on Mississippi’s roads, and such archives illustrate its institutional history.

The images highlight changes in training, uniforms, vehicles and public outreach over many decades and may be of interest to historians, former employees and residents who track local law enforcement history. Visual retrospectives like this can help the public understand how agencies evolve in equipment and community roles.
