Mississippi braces for severe winter weather
Gov. Tate Reeves said Mississippi is expecting severe winter weather beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend, including freezing temperatures, freezing rain, sleet and snow.
In a Facebook post, Reeves said his office is coordinating with the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and the Mississippi Department of Transportation. He said state officials will continue to monitor the situation and respond as necessary alongside local emergency managers.
Reeves urged residents to prepare in advance by stocking up on water, nonperishable food and medicine; insulating pipes; letting faucets drip; and checking on neighbors or others who may need help during the storm. He also advised people to continue monitoring the forecast throughout the weekend.
Winter storms can cause hazardous travel and power outages, and state agencies typically activate emergency plans to support response and recovery. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
