MEMA warns of dangerously cold temperatures across Mississippi

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said dangerously cold temperatures are expected across the state beginning Jan. 30 and lasting through noon Feb. 1, with wind chills in many areas near or below zero.

MEMA said in a Facebook post that the advisory comes as many residents remain without power following last week’s winter weather. The agency urged anyone who needs shelter to visit its shelter page at https://www.msema.org/get-assistance/disaster-resources/shelters-and-safe-rooms for locations reported to MEMA by county.

If residents do not find a warming shelter listed for their area, MEMA advised contacting local city or county officials for information on available assistance. The agency also encouraged people to check on neighbors and family members who may be vulnerable to cold, including the elderly and those with medical needs.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency coordinates the state’s preparedness and response to disasters. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
