MEMA urges Mississippi to prepare for significant winter storm
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to prepare for a significant winter storm and dangerously cold temperatures starting Friday, Jan. 23, 2026.
MEMA said in a Facebook post that it is working closely with the National Weather Service, which is forecasting the storm and the extreme cold Friday night through the weekend. The agency advised residents to continue monitoring the forecast and to begin making preparations.
MEMA is the state agency responsible for coordinating disaster response and preparedness in Mississippi. In situations like this, state and local officials typically coordinate with emergency responders, transportation agencies and utility providers to reduce risks from travel disruptions, power outages and hazards related to freezing temperatures.
Officials generally recommend basic winter preparedness such as checking emergency supplies, ensuring heating systems are functional, planning for potential travel interruptions and looking out for vulnerable neighbors. MEMA said it will continue to update the public throughout the week. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
