MEMA reports aid deliveries as power restoration continues

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said Sunday that 41 counties have requested 662 items of aid as winter weather impacts persist across the state.

In a Facebook post, MEMA said it and the National Guard have distributed 275,832 bottles of water, 93,412 meals, 4,739 blankets, 1,990 cots and 4,322 tarps to impacted counties.

Progress continues on power restoration, MEMA said. As of 10:30 a.m. Sunday, about 57,573 power outages remained, with more customers coming back online every hour. MEMA said thousands of linemen are working around the clock to restore service.

Fifty-three generators are installed at critical infrastructure sites, MEMA said, and as power is restored some generators are being moved to other locations where they are needed. The agency said it continues to fill county requests for meals, water, cots, blankets and generators; the tally of requests was current as of 8 a.m. Sunday.

MEMA is the state agency that coordinates disaster response in Mississippi and is working with the National Guard to deliver supplies and support. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
