MEMA assesses storm damage after one death in Mississippi

PEARL, Miss. — The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said it is working with county officials to assess damage after severe storms moved through the state overnight on March 11, 2026, leaving one person dead and additional injuries reported.

MEMA said reports include homes damaged, downed trees and widespread power outages as crews continue to survey affected areas. The agency is coordinating with local emergency managers to document damage and identify immediate needs.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, based in Pearl, coordinates state response to natural disasters, including damage assessments, resource requests and coordination with local and federal partners. Damage assessments are the first step in determining whether communities may qualify for additional state or federal assistance.

Severe storms can cause prolonged power outages, blocked roads and interruptions to services that affect residents’ safety and recovery. Officials urged people in affected areas to heed local warnings, avoid downed power lines and check on neighbors, especially older adults and people with disabilities.
