MDOT reopens I-22 and I-55 in north Mississippi after winter closures
The Mississippi Department of Transportation said at 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, that all previously closed lanes of Interstate 22/U.S. 78 from Red Banks at Exit 21 to the Tennessee state line are open, and the previously closed section of Interstate 55 north of Como at Exit 257 is also open.
MDOT cautioned that icy conditions, debris and maintenance crews remain on site in those areas, and officials urged motorists not to travel on either route unless travel is essential.
The department reported ice on roads and bridges in 21 Mississippi counties: Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Lafayette, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Prentiss, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Washington and Yalobusha counties.
For live road conditions, MDOT advised drivers to download the MDOT Traffic app from the App Store or Google Play or visit MDOTtraffic.com. The department said counties with reports of ice are shaded blue on its maps and reiterated that travel in affected areas should be limited to emergencies.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
