Lowndes County urges safe use of median crossovers

Lowndes County, Mississippi, posted a Traffic Tip Tuesday message on its Facebook page urging drivers to follow proper steps when using median crossovers to reduce the risk of crashes.

The county advised drivers to enter the median crossover and come to a complete stop, yield to all oncoming traffic, and when it is safe, complete the left turn into the nearest lane. Officials warned drivers not to block traffic while waiting and not to make wide or unsafe turns across multiple lanes.

Median crossovers are designated openings in the center of divided highways that allow drivers to make left turns across opposing traffic. Improper use can increase the chance of collisions and endanger motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Lowndes County urged motorists to slow down, be patient and drive safely. Taking a few extra seconds when using a median crossover can help keep roadways safer for everyone, the county said.
