Lafayette County, Oxford distribute MREs, water

Lafayette County and the City of Oxford will distribute meals-ready-to-eat (MREs) and water Friday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. while supplies last, according to a Facebook post. Distributors will limit supplies to up to three days’ worth per person to help ensure supplies reach as many residents as possible.

Distribution sites in Lafayette County include Harmontown SO Substation at 12 CR 517; Lafayette High School at 160 Commodore Dr.; Lafayette County Fire Station 3 at 22 CR 369; and Oasis Church at 861 Highway 6 West, the post said.

Sites in the City of Oxford are City Hall, CB Webb, Wayne Johnson and Thacker at Garden Terrace, the post said. The Facebook announcement asked residents to be patient and kind; the sites are being staffed by the National Guard.

MREs are shelf-stable field rations commonly used in emergency response to provide immediate food when regular supplies are unavailable. Officials said supplies are limited and distribution will continue only until supplies run out. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
