Jackson police investigate two homicides
Jackson police are investigating two separate homicides that occurred within days, including the death of an 18-year-old who initially survived a shooting, the Jackson Police Department said.
The department said Joel Terrell, 18, died Thursday from injuries he sustained in a shooting April 8 at a residence in the 900 block of Valencia Street. Officers responding to the scene found four people inside the home, including two victims who had been shot. A female victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Terrell was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Authorities said his next of kin has been notified.
In a separate case, officers responded about 7:56 p.m. Friday to a reported shooting at a business in the 500 block of Cooper Road. Upon arrival, they found 33-year-old Leonard Banks lying on the sidewalk in front of the store. Police said Banks had been shot once and was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has been notified.
Detectives are working to determine suspects and motives in both cases, and both incidents remain under investigation, the department said. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Jackson Police Department at 601-960-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
