Ice remains on roads, bridges in 14 Mississippi counties

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, the Mississippi Department of Transportation said ice remained on roads and bridges in 14 counties across the northern and western parts of the state.

The agency listed Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Coahoma, DeSoto, Lafayette, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah and Tunica counties. The department’s Facebook post said, “For your safety, we’re still urging emergency travel in areas affected by winter weather.” It added, “If you have to drive, please continue to use extreme caution.”

MDOT urged motorists to check live road conditions by downloading the free MDOT Traffic app from the App Store or Google Play, or by visiting MDOTtraffic.com. The department is responsible for maintaining state highways and bridges and regularly issues travel advisories during winter storms.

Icy roads and bridges increase the risk of crashes, spinouts and travel delays, particularly on overpasses and shaded areas where ice can persist after temperatures rise. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
