Hattiesburg police investigate fatal pedestrian crash
Hattiesburg police said officers responded Thursday, March 19, at approximately 8:35 p.m. to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash near the intersection of U.S. Highway 49 and West Pine Street.
The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital and later died of injuries sustained in the crash, the Hattiesburg Police Department said. The department is withholding the pedestrian’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, who said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. The department did not provide additional details about contributing factors or potential charges.
U.S. Highway 49 is a principal north-south route through Hattiesburg, and crashes involving pedestrians are a focus of traffic-safety efforts by local law enforcement nationwide. Investigators typically examine the scene, collect evidence and interview witnesses to determine the sequence of events and whether any laws were violated.
This is a developing story. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
