Gulfport hiring community service officers

The City of Gulfport is recruiting community service officers to support the Gulfport Police Department, the city announced on its Facebook page. Officials said the positions offer a chance to serve the community and gain experience in public safety.

Community service officers will handle calls that do not require a sworn officer, including traffic control, parking enforcement, minor reports, funeral escorts, abandoned vehicles and assistance with community projects, according to the announcement.

The city said the jobs provide a way for dependable residents who enjoy working with the public to get a foot in the door of public safety. Community service officers often free sworn officers to respond to higher-priority incidents by taking on routine and noncriminal duties.
