Former Southaven lieutenant, Delta State police chief dies

Neely “Lynn” Lynwood Buford, a former lieutenant with the Southaven Police Department who later served as chief of police at Delta State University, has died, the Southaven Police Department and Delta State University said in posts on Facebook.

After leaving Southaven, Buford continued his career in campus policing and returned to Cleveland in 1994 to serve as Delta State’s chief of police. He served in that role until his retirement in 2016, the university said.

Delta State said Buford was a proud DSU graduate who earned a master’s degree there and met his wife, Sandra, while attending the university. The school praised his warm smile and friendly presence and said he helped make the campus a welcoming and safe community.

The Southaven Police Department offered its sincere condolences to Buford’s family, friends and colleagues. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
