Fire cancels Spring Market, consignment sale at Mississippi Trade Mart
JACKSON — A fire that broke out in a vendor booth at the Mississippi Trade Mart on the State Fairgrounds forced cancellation of weekend events, including the Spring Market and the All 4 Children Consignment sale, State Fairgrounds officials said.
The fire started in a vendor booth in Trade Hall B and was contained to that booth and those immediately surrounding it, officials said. Initial assessments indicate little or no fire or water damage to the Trade Mart building, but smoke spread extensively throughout the facility, officials said.
The Southern Cutting Horse Futurity, scheduled this weekend at the Kirk Fordice Equine Center on the State Fairgrounds campus, will proceed as planned and is unaffected by the fire, officials said. The Mississippi Trade Mart is an event complex on the State Fairgrounds that hosts markets, consignment sales and other public gatherings.
Officials said they will provide updates on the status of other upcoming events at the Trade Mart as assessments continue. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
