Fatal crash on U.S. 49 kills one, injures two

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — A crash on U.S. 49 just after 1 p.m. Wednesday left one motorist dead and two others injured, Hattiesburg police said.

Police said the two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of U.S. 49 and Old Highway 42 on March 18. Both vehicles sustained significant damage. Two occupants were transported to a local hospital for treatment, and a third motorist was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the crash is under investigation, police said.

U.S. 49 is a major north-south route through Mississippi that carries local and through traffic, and intersections along the highway have been the sites of collisions in the past. Hattiesburg police and other emergency responders regularly investigate crashes to determine factors such as speed, impairment and roadway conditions.
