Extreme cold warning begins Friday; warming centers open
An Extreme Cold Warning takes effect at 11:59 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, local officials warned, bringing below-freezing conditions and dangerous wind chills.
The advisory says Friday night temperatures will be in the mid-20s with wind chills in the low teens, and Saturday night will be even colder with lows near 20 degrees. Officials urged residents to make plans now to protect people, pets, pipes and plants.
Warming centers are scheduled to open Friday evening and Saturday evening, with additional nights to be added as necessary, the post said. The notice directed residents to safety information from the National Weather Service at https://www.weather.gov/safety/cold and to the local NWS office at https://www.weather.gov/lix for updates.
Extreme Cold Warnings are issued when dangerously cold conditions increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite and when infrastructure such as water pipes can freeze. Local emergency management officials encouraged people to monitor forecasts, check on vulnerable neighbors and contact their Emergency Management Agency with operational questions. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
