Driver strikes trooper patrol car in Jones County construction zone

A driver struck a state trooper’s parked patrol vehicle in a Jones County construction zone, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said in a Facebook post. The agency said the crash occurred “today” while the trooper was stationary with blue lights activated to warn motorists to slow down and move over.

The department said the inattentive motorist failed to slow and move over, striking the patrol vehicle. It described the crash as the second rear-end collision involving a trooper in recent weeks. The trooper suffered only minor injuries, the agency said.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety, which oversees the state highway patrol and traffic safety enforcement, has repeatedly urged drivers to avoid distractions and to yield to emergency and roadside workers. Distracted driving and failure to move over remain common causes of highway collisions and injuries nationwide, officials say.

The agency reiterated: slow down, pay attention and move over for first responders. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
