Colby Huffman shows recovery progress, family says
Corporal Colby Huffman is making progress in his recovery, his family said in a Facebook post shared by the Starkville Police Department on March 6. Neurologists are “very pleased” with his progress, and a recent CT scan shows his head injuries continue to heal, the family said.
The family outlined recent milestones. They said Huffman underwent successful surgery to repair a broken femur on Tuesday, March 3, and had a tracheostomy on Thursday, March 5, to replace an endotracheal tube, a step the family described as important for comfort and for weaning him from the ventilator.
The family said doctors hope Huffman will be breathing entirely on his own within a few days. They said they will travel Monday, March 9, to the Shepherd Center in Georgia for the remainder of his hospitalization and the start of intensive therapy. The Shepherd Center is a rehabilitation hospital known for treating patients with brain and spinal injuries.
The family asked for continued prayers and said they are grateful for public support. They said they will share an address for cards once they are settled in Georgia and provided a GoFundMe link (gofund.me/1e4297242) and information about a gun raffle organized by the Starkville Police Department to help with recovery expenses. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
