Biloxi Police offer trespass letters to help protect property

BILOXI, Mississippi — The Biloxi Police Department is urging property owners to ask about trespass letters, saying the formal warnings can speed officers’ response to unwanted visitors and recurring trespass problems.

The department said in a Facebook post that a trespass letter — also called a trespass warning or notice — is a formal document issued by a property owner or on their behalf by law enforcement that names specific individuals who are no longer permitted on the property.

Biloxi police said once a trespass letter is on file with the department, officers can arrest a listed individual for criminal trespass if that person returns, without requiring the property owner to sign a new complaint each time. The department said the letters remove an administrative step and give officers clear authority to act quickly.

Police said trespass letters can address not only known problem individuals but also loiterers or people found on property outside authorized hours, a tool that can be useful for businesses and landlords. The department said the service is free and on record with the Biloxi Police Department. Property owners can call (228) 435-6107 or visit www.biloxi.ms.us/police for more information. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
