Authorities warn motorists to avoid I-55 North, I-22 West amid icy conditions

Road conditions remain and will remain miserable on I-55 North and I-22 West, a Facebook reel said, and motorists are being urged to avoid travel until conditions improve.

The post said troopers and CTED officers are positioned in Grenada, Marshall County and Batesville to turn vehicles around because stretches of the interstates are nearly impassable. The post also said the Mississippi Department of Transportation needs the roads clear so crews can work on removing ice.

I-55 is a primary north-south highway through Mississippi and I-22 is a major east-west route in the northern part of the state. Closures or impassable sections on those highways can affect commuter traffic, commercial deliveries and emergency response.

The social media message referenced “Colonel Pitts” and urged residents to avoid travel and stay safe. Details in the post were limited. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
