Alcorn County Sheriff warns residents about phone scam
Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents after receiving reports that callers are impersonating deputies and demanding payment to avoid arrest.
The sheriff’s office said in a social media post that several citizens received calls from an individual claiming to be an officer and saying the citizen had a warrant and must pay or be arrested. “No one from the Sheriff’s Office will ever call and attempt to collect money,” the post said. The office urged people to hang up immediately if they receive a similar call.
Impersonation scams that pose as law enforcement are a common tactic used to extort money or obtain personal information. Officials generally advise residents to verify any contact by calling an agency directly using a published phone number, rather than numbers provided by a caller, and to avoid sharing financial information over the phone.
The warning underscores the risk of financial fraud and the importance of vigilance among residents. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
