Alcorn County sheriff warns of phone scam

The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that several residents have received phone calls from an individual claiming to be an officer who tells the caller they have a warrant and must pay or be arrested.

The sheriff’s office said the calls are a scam and that no one from the office will ever call to demand payment. The post urged recipients to hang up immediately if they receive a similar call.

Alcorn County, located in northeastern Mississippi, is served by the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office, which handles law enforcement, jail operations and court-related duties in the county. Impersonation scams that use the names of real government agencies are a common tactic used to pressure people into sending money or revealing personal information.

Consumer protection authorities generally advise people to decline to provide personal or financial information over the phone, verify any law-enforcement contact by calling the agency’s publicly listed nonemergency number, and report suspicious calls to local authorities. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
