Virginia Kate Gammon revives Mosaic, links medicine and art

Virginia Kate Gammon, a future physician at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has helped revive The Mosaic, an arts journal that provides students, faculty and staff with a creative outlet while honoring the influence of her grandmother, the university said.

The Mosaic offers contributors a forum to publish visual art, creative writing and other work that reflects the medical center community, the university reported. Gammon’s efforts to bring the journal back aim to create a sustained space for expression alongside rigorous clinical training.

Medical educators increasingly emphasize the role of arts and humanities in training clinicians, saying creative practice can support empathy, communication and resilience among health professionals. Campus publications such as The Mosaic can also foster community, offer stress relief and give students and staff a way to share personal experiences related to health care.

The university published a profile about Gammon and the revived journal with additional details online. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
