UMMC launches John D. Bower School of Population Health

In 2016, the University of Mississippi Medical Center launched the John D. Bower School of Population Health, a move the medical center called a major milestone in its efforts to broaden health care in the state.

UMMC said the school was among only a handful of population health schools nationwide at the time and expanded the institution’s mission beyond individual patient care to population-focused health solutions.

Population health schools typically emphasize prevention, community-level interventions and efforts to address social determinants of health, aiming to improve outcomes for groups rather than only for individual patients. UMMC is the state’s academic medical center and is known for providing clinical care, education and research across Mississippi.

The medical center posted the milestone on its social media page and linked to a news article about how the school came to be and the legacy behind its name. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
