UMMC Department Marks 70 Years, Emphasizes Translational Research
The University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is marking 70 years and says it has grown into a powerhouse of translational research that advances discoveries from the laboratory into clinical practice.
UMMC said in a social media post linking to a news article on its website that the department began during a transformative era in pharmacological science and has since reflected decades of leadership, innovation and growth.
Departments of pharmacology and toxicology typically study how drugs affect the body and how to identify and prevent harmful effects. Translational research aims to bridge basic laboratory findings and patient care, accelerating development of new treatments and improving safety assessments for medicines and therapies.
UMMC’s milestone highlights the role academic medical centers play in training researchers, supporting clinical trials and fostering collaborations between scientists and clinicians. The department’s work has implications for patient care, public health and biomedical innovation. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
