UMMC closes clinics, cancels elective procedures after cyberattack
The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) said in a Facebook post Feb. 21 that it is continuing to respond to a recent cyberattack alongside federal and state agencies and cybersecurity experts, and will close clinics statewide on Monday, Feb. 23 and Tuesday, Feb. 24.
Elective procedures scheduled for those days are canceled, the post said, and appointments will be rescheduled when possible. UMMC hospitals and emergency departments in Jackson, Grenada, Madison County and Holmes County remain open, and the center apologized for the disruption to access to its services.
UMMC operates hospitals and clinics across Mississippi and serves as the state’s academic health center, providing emergency, inpatient and outpatient care. Cyberattacks on health systems can force temporary closures of clinics and the cancellation of routine or elective care while staff and outside experts secure networks and restore access to electronic records and scheduling systems.
Officials are working to restore normal operations and to notify affected patients. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
