Thyroid affects nearly every organ system, UMC warns

The University of Mississippi Medical Center warns that the thyroid plays a critical role in nearly every organ system and that millions of Americans have thyroid disease, many of whom do not know it.

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism, heart rate and body temperature. Those hormones influence multiple organs and systems across the body, which is why thyroid problems can have wide-ranging effects.

UMC said people should learn the warning signs and risks of thyroid disease and understand when symptoms could signal a medical emergency. Its news page offers guidance on common symptoms and when to seek medical attention.

Raising awareness matters because undiagnosed thyroid disease can affect quality of life and may require medical evaluation. Recognizing symptoms can prompt timely testing and follow-up care. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
