Family gift funds UMMC nursing scholarships to ease Mississippi shortage

JACKSON, Miss. — A $5 million family gift will fund new scholarships at the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s School of Nursing Oxford Center to help address Mississippi’s nursing shortage, the medical center said.

The scholarships are intended for students who commit to building health care careers in the state, UMMC said in a news release. The funding is expected to reduce financial barriers for nursing students and support workforce development in hospitals, clinics and long-term care facilities across Mississippi.

UMMC is the state’s only academic medical center and plays a major role in training physicians, nurses and other health professionals who serve rural and urban communities. Nursing shortages have strained health systems nationwide and in Mississippi, where hospitals often report challenges in recruiting and retaining qualified nurses.

The gift adds to efforts by educators and health leaders to expand training capacity and encourage graduates to remain in the state. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
