Agreement reached, special session to be called

May 23, 2025 – Mississippi legislators will head back to Jackson next week for a special session on the state budget. A date for that to happen has not yet been announced.

In a statement Friday afternoon, Gov. Tate Reeves confirmed that House and Senate leaders have agreed on a $7 billion budget deal, an agreement not reached when the regular session ended on April 3.

With the agreement, Reeves is now bringing both Houses back into session to work out the details. A budget has to be settled by July 1, when the new fiscal year begins.

Reeves’ office released the following statement Friday afternoon.

“Now that we’ve reached an agreement on the budget, today I informed Lt. Governor Hosemann and Speaker White that I intend to call a special session for the middle of next week,” Reeves said. “The proposed budget does not materially increase state spending, is fiscally conservative, and will help us to continue Mississippi’s historic economic momentum.”

The governor went on to say, “I’m proud of the work we’ve done to reach this agreement. I’d like to thank Mississippi’s legislative appropriators for working diligently throughout the budget negotiation process. I’m excited to get the special session completed and look forward to quickly passing the budget.”

Reeves said he will provide more updates next week.
