Toppers dominate, sweep Rust College in doubleheader

Holly Springs, Mississippi — Blue Mountain Christian University scored 30-4 and 9-4 to sweep Rust College in a doubleheader Wednesday, the school’s athletics department said. The wins came at home as the Toppers prepare to face the University of Tennessee Southern on March 20 at 5:00 p.m.

Blue Mountain opened the first game with three runs in the first inning, added five in the second and unleashed a 15-run fourth inning en route to the 30-4 victory. The Toppers totaled 19 hits; Cody Presley went 3-for-6 with seven RBIs and two home runs, Jacob Bryant was 3-for-5 with five RBIs, and Jake Meilstrup scored five runs with three hits, the athletics department said.

On the mound, JD Klug earned the win, allowing one run over four innings while striking out three. Jack Hearn, Jesse Mellinger and Jabari Farr provided relief to finish the rout, according to the school.

In the nightcap, Blue Mountain built an early lead and used a four-run third inning to separate before holding off a Rust rally for a 9-4 victory. Ross Polizzi led the attack with a 3-for-5 night and two RBIs, including a home run; Hugh Parsons was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Judson Griffin earned the win in relief and Jarrett Morris closed for the save. The Toppers will look to carry the momentum into conference play.
