Spring cleaning helps keep kitchen bugs out

With warmer weather and hosting season under way, homeowners should take immediate steps to keep insects out of the kitchen, experts say. Insects gravitate to areas with food and can reproduce rapidly; StatePoint notes it can take one week for two fruit flies to multiply to 500.

Start with a deep clean in spring and before gatherings. Tackle corners, crevices and seldom-cleaned surfaces in the refrigerator, oven and pantry where food residue and grease can attract pests.

Indoor fly traps can catch insects that cleaning misses. The Zevo flying insect trap plugs in near sinks, trash cans, fruit bowls and doors and uses blue and ultraviolet light to attract fruit flies, gnats and house flies, the maker says. “Plugging in a Zevo Insect Trap is an easy way to achieve that level of cleanliness you’re looking for, so you have more time for what matters — enjoying the spring season with friends and family,” said Rob Reinerman, vice president of Procter & Gamble Ventures, parent company of Zevo.

Homeowners should also fix leaks and seal food tightly. Leaks under sinks create water sources that attract bugs and can lead to water damage and mold. Transfer flour, sugar and similar items from paper packaging into airtight containers to keep ingredients fresher and reduce pest access.
